Requirements in EA or Doors?
« on: January 30, 2018, 08:16:08 am »
Hi Everyone. We are in the design phase of a fairly large sofware project with requirements in a large ms word document at the moment. We need to trace requirements to higher level ones, tests, and software. Our plan was to do this in Rational Doors, but I have been looking at the requirements management capabilities built in to EA 13.

I wondered if anyone here has experience of using EA for requirements managemet alone, and linked to Doors, and if so which method you prefer?

It depends...

EA is rather sloppy when it comes to identifiers of requirements. And you want to have them for your customer, the testers, etc. You can pimp EA with self-written add-ins to provide you with that (requires some work). But although DOORS has never left the stone age it's probably the better choice to give you those IDs. EA has an MDG to import DOORS data. That works rather well, though I also used my own importer here to do some magic synch.

I remember something called RAQuest which improves RM with pure EA, but I have no experience with that (it's from Sparx Japan).

Hi,

I have almost the same experiences as qwerty.

Looking at the functional aspect, taking beside budget, image,...
- EA is excellent in integrating requirements with Model, Test,...
- DOORS and the other requirements specialists are great in doing requirements but often lacks behind in integration

Best regards,

Helmut

Haven't used DOORS for about 20 years now. It was a pain back then and I'll never use it again.

You could import the MS Word Document into Sparx EA using the MS Word importer and can link requirements to high level requirements and to tests.

In the old days we used to link requirements to design components and build stuff then we would know we'd had built the right thing. We'd confirm that by linking the requirements to tests to check it meets the requirements.

Happy to help
