Vision Importer update
« on: February 17, 2022, 12:31:57 pm »
I have the need to import some Vision diagrams (don't ask why).
Importing Visio Diagrams into Enterprise Architect | Sparx Systems
Moving Visio Diagrams into Enterprise Architect | Sparx Systems

I downloaded and installed the importer.
It only looks for .vsd and .vdx files?!

This is a suggestion that it be updated

It has been, as part of Model Integration for Microsoft Office
Ah, thanks.
some observations:
  • neither of the pages I reference mentions that
  • what is the difference in functionality for Vision importing between MDG for Visio and MDG for Office?
  • and the small matter of $0 versus $145
And I quote from your link
Visio Importer  MDG Integration for Office also includes a Visio Importer, which translates Microsoft Visio diagrams (files with .vsd and .vdx extensions) into an equivalent model in Enterprise Architect.
Migrating from Visio to Enterprise Architect helps you to better utilize existing data across the whole enterprise.Read more about moving from Visio to Enterprise Architect.

Observing that the "Read More" link goes to one of the pages I reference and a "free" download that does .vsd;
and observing mention of .vsd in the quote above.

Reading History - MDG Office Integration | Sparx Systems leads me to think .vsdx format is not supported.

I can't say definitively that it has been updated to support that file format. Only that if you're wanting an update it will be there.

Its worth noting a few things about importing visio diagrams with visio importer.
  • You have limited options to what UML elements it will translate the visio elements into. For example if you want to import BPMN diagram you can't. It will only import it as a UML Activity diagram. You'll have to write a script to convert to BPMN elements
  • if the visio diagram is drawn poorly where connectors aren't connected properly to the elements they won't be imported
  • The resulting imported diagram is often in a poor state and requires manual fixing. Sometimes its easier just to manually create the diagram from scratch

Hi Sunshine,
Is this with the original importer or the new (not free as in beer) one?

BTW: the Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Runtime is NOW at: https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/download/confirmation.aspx?id=48217

The message on the installer needs updating and fixing (bad "\n" character)

The visio importer with office MDG(pay for) vs the visio importer(free) is not really that much better and both have limitations of importing base UML elements such as activity, class etc.
Noting that neither works with V16RC 64bit. Sparx say theyll release a new version of office MDG for 64 bit.

Is it a beta version or an official release? Last time I look at it was a beta version.

It was meant to be an official release. There's still a couple of places that showed beta, but you're talking about using it with a version of EA that hasn't been officially released.

It has been, as part of Model Integration for Microsoft Office

Based on the above, does it mean that the Visio importer standalone and free MDG should be considered as discontinued similarly to the Cloud Service integrated in the Pro Cloud Server ?
If so, does it mean that the MDG Office can be used without any license to access the Visio Importer only? Or does it mean that EA users no longer have a free access to the Visio Importer (new versions) and must purchase the MDG or have the Ultimate edition?

As I can see, the stand alone Visio Importer is the same as the included in MDG Office v 1.0.7.0
I have 2 instances of Visio Importer, One Standalone v 1.8.42 and one exter that came when MDG for Office was installed and this is also 1.4.82
Im using EA 15.2.1560
The v EA 16 Beta I havent got to work with MDG Office yet

So to summarise - back to OP, there does not appear to be a free version to download that supports .vdx files.
