Sparx hangs drawing relationships
« on: March 11, 2014, 04:44:23 am »
I have come across this once in the past but we suddenly have a few more examples.

When attempting to draw a relationship line between two elements on a diagram, Sparx hangs, and has to be crashed and restarted.

In the past I narrowed it down to one side of the relationship, where it seems an element has gone bad somehow. If I completely recreate that element we can get things to work again. I was in the process of trying to recover a bad element like this today, when I started to find a few more elements that seem to also have gone bad.

I was wondering if anyone has encountered this before?

Can you please confirm which program version of Enterprise Architect you are currently running?  (See: Help | About EA)
What type of diagram?  What are the elements you are connecting?  What type of Connector?  Where are the elements located in the Project Browser in relation to each other?

I vaguely recall an issue related to BPMN diagrams a while back where the diagram view appeared to freeze, but I think this may have since been fixed.  Perhaps try updating to a newer build of Enterprise Architect if possible to see if it resolves your problem.

We are using V 10.0.1008

The Diagram type is a custom MDG diagram based on BPMN2.0 Process Diagram.

The Elements are a variety, BPMN Activities, Events, and Gateways. (Also having the same issue with a BPMN Pool on another diagram)

The relationships are BPMN Sequence Flows.

The elements do live in a mix of locations in the project browser tree.

I should also add that when this happens Sparx cpu usage goes to 100%

Your question about element location in the tree got me thinking, and just tried a single quick test.

I have two elements that I cannot connect, and when I place them both under the same parent in the tree, I can connect them. When I return them to their original locations I cannot connect them.

I will try some more variations.

EDIT: Well that may be a clue, but with other elements it does not solve the problem, even with the same parent it hangs

The problem seems to be when the elements do not have the same parent.

My workaround is to temporarily place the elements under the same parent, connect them, and put them back where they belong.

Do you believe this has been fixed in a version later than v 10.0.1008?

Pretty sure this has been fixed in the EA 11 beta.
