Dupping the Find in Diagrams behaviour

I'm trying to create an automation add-in which requires the capability currently provided by the Find in Diagrams (ctrl+U) functionality.  I am able to open a diagram for a selected element, but the element on the open diagram is not selected/active.  I need to provide this functionality so the user can see the element location on the diagram.  Anyone have an idea how to make this happen?
