RTF editor missing main menu
« on: August 18, 2009, 01:38:36 pm »
In 847 the RTF main menu bar has gone awol
Here is what it looks like now (note the menu under the title bar IS NOT the RTF editor menu)

Here is what it used to look like (sorry about the small size here, but if you strain your eyes and look directly under the title bar) ...

Could we have it back please

PS could we upload photos to this forum please.

Can you check how you got to this editor screen?

The give-away is the file path just above the editor toolbar. This indicates that you have opened the Normal.rtf template file using the EA File editor (File | Open Source File). This is almost identical to the Linked Document editor, and in both cases the editing menu is a context menu that you display by right-clicking on the document text area. However, if you open the Linked Document editor (right-click on element, select Linked Document or Edit Linked Document option) the title bar contains the parent element name, not a file path.

If you open the RTF Style Template editor through the Generate RTF Documentation dialog, you see two additional things: the Sections panel on the left, and the editing menu bar at the top of the editor screen. There is no file path or element name in the title bar of this screen. As far as I can see, that editor is still displaying with everything it should have.

Thanks for the quick response.
I'm not sure where to find the Generate RTF Documentation dialogue, but I think this is what you were referring to.

As you can see there is no editing menu. Surely the editing menu should display whenever the editor is being use.

Yes, what you have displayed there is the RTF Style Template Editor. To get to it you must have selected one of several options in various places to display the Generate RTF Documentation dialog (simplest is to click on a package in the Project Browser and press F8), and then either picked a template on the Generate tab and clicked on the Edit Template button, or clicked on the Templates tab, selected a template and clicked on the Edit button.

Anyway, you have managed to get to the editor you wanted!

Thanks, thats right, but where is the Menu bar?
While I acknowledge the menu is there as a context item, its more sensible (and normal) to have the menu bar there in broad daylight.

You know, as I am doing a lot of documentation I keep coming back to this.
It is a real retrograde step to hide the menu bar in some places.

Agreed. It is particularly annoying when it appears in the file editor but not the template editor (why?). Another of the inconsistencies-without-good-reason that make the RTF editor in EA such a joy to use.

Yes I second that, its definitely a retrograde. Its also inconsistent which is another User interface design sin.

Happy to help

I agree it's annoying, but I've got used to it.   I'm now in the habit of just hitting F8 and going to the templates tab.

So that's how you get to the RTF Style Template Editor. I kept seeing references to it in the help but could not for the life of me figure out how to get to it. I kept going via the RTF Document Generation dialog, which does not provide any way to edit Normal.rtf. That was driving me crazy!

After all this time the File menu has never reappeared (not in EA 12.)
The clumsy context menu is the only way to get to the file menu.
How about some floating toolbars, say for edit, view, insert, table, paragraph etc.
