If you draw an ellipse at the target end and use strokepath, it will behave like fillandstrokepath.  However, at the source end it does not.  This can easily be tested by swapping the names of the subshapes in the shapescript.  Exactly the same code behaves differently, depending on the end it is operating on.

EAUI! (and please don't tell me this is by design...  :'()
