MS Installer Problems
« on: July 11, 2002, 02:44:28 am »
We were able to use the new MS-Installer based full version installer successfully on Windows 2000 and Windows XP. But, we get an error message stating that we have an old version of MS Installer and should install a SP, when we try it on a Windows NT 4 machine with SP6. It already has Office 2000 installed. We tried to install the MS Installer package itself, Windows NT SP6a and the MS Installer that you have links to. All failed. We had to download the patch and replace the executable, but a full installation is better sometimes (with the new sample, help, etc.)

Any ideas about the problem?

Hi,

I must confess to a certain level of frustration myself with regard to the MSI based setups. We originally built the latest version of EA with the latest MSI Installer package - but it seems this is not commonly installed - and not compatible with NT SP5 or lower.

To save space with the registered version we excluded the auto-install of MSI (save about 1.5mb in size) ... but this has caused people a few headaches.

So it appears, to support most installations we will have to roll back to MSI 1.2 ... and include the auto-install of MSI if required feature.

I am posting build 499 at the moment - which is really an update of the installer package as described above. I will also check out the link on our website to the MSI update - but with the auto install feature, it should not be required.

We will post an announcement when the new installs are ready ... if you still experience problems - please let us know,

Cheers,
Geoff Sparks

I just downloaded the eval and am having the same problem on Win 2k. I also just installed SP2 and am still unable to install the eval.

I'm current working on a site where admin access to the machines is restricted and it takes a while and a bit of paper work to get stuff installed. If I could just plonk an exe into the dir, it would be excellent.

Thanks

p.s. EA rocks!

???  I also am having trouble with the MS Installer here at the office.  We have Windows 2000 and it is administered so upgrading installers is probably not to be taken lightly here.  Meantime am using patch.

Hi,

A new version of the setup files has been posted - which downgrades the MSI level required to install on Windows 2k to 1.1 ... the version initially installed with Win2k. This should now run OK on Windows 2000 - without requiring an MSI update. While some people seem able to install the MSI 2.0 update without a problem - others cannot. I note with interest that Microsoft have apparently delayed the release of Win2K SP3 due to bugs in the MSI 2.0 installer code.

For registered users a link has been place on the registered user / download page to an Installshield based setup.

For the trial version use:
http://sparxsystems.com.au/bin/EATrial310_IS.exe

We would like to dispense with the older setup package as soon as we are confident no-one is being adversely affected.
