EA on Linux/Wine

Anyone had any joy with running EA on Linux with Wine? I tried and had a problem with installing msxml3.dll. The resulting installation didn't work funnily enough.

I have installed Lindows 1.2.49, side by side with Windows 98, on a 460 MHz Celeron, 64 Meg of RAM, 5 Gig hdrive desktop. I am a Lindows "insider", which means that I am a registered user willing to test the current prerelease version, and that I am conscious that the OS' status is still Beta. Lindows is based on Debian Linux, and includes Wine (Windows emulation).

I was very impressed by the fact that EA runs there up to the point of displaying diagrams (with some glitches), and permitting me to see some of the metadata in the properties workspace. The fun stops there, however, because if I try to double click on any object, EA freezes.

I don't know whether this is because I don't have yet the 128 Meg specified for running Lindows (because I'm evaluating it on a "spare" machine), or Wine gets to point where it is lacking a dll, or something.

Next week, hopefully, I am going to install Lindows on a much more robust machine. I'll keep you posted on this, if you are interested.

Hey, Andrew! I posted my reply before including something I wanted to ask you: you seem to be much more proficient in Wine than I; could you post any progress you do on your side? Thanks.

Hi Geoff,

Just trying to make sure this doesn't get lost.

If EA were to work under Linux (probably under WINE), it would be the undisputable upper/lower CASE tool in the world of open software.

For me, running EA under Linux would be the last, liberating step to fully migrate from Windows. (I know, I know: "The forest keeper ain't going to like this, Yogui...") Please, tell me if I can be of any help. I would be glad to enroll some modest but effective help.

Hi,

I have had a brief look at this - and had some encouraging reports from other users. My own experiences were not that encouraging - although there were some installation problems with the version of Wine I had and the Mandrake distribution.

If you have any suggestions, experience or ideas concerning this, I would be happy to give it another try. Im not all that familiar with the WINE environment and what API calls will work and what wont.

Hi, I'm the original poster for this thread (before I registered). Sorry I've been away from this.

Further info. I also tried installing EA on a freshly installed NT build (within VMWare). This was without a recent version of IE and the install failed with the same error about msxml3.dll I believe. This was a while ago so I can't remember exactly. To get further with this it may be required to either install a newer version of IE, or some how get hold of the latest MSXML stuff. I've come across issues with the MSXML stuff before with earlier versions of IE and XSLT processing. The solution was to install a newer version of MSXML.

I've haven't been playing with this or EA for a while, but hopefully I'll get around to it sometime.
