Some question about EA multi user support
« on: December 29, 2002, 02:06:49 am »
1.Are there locking facilities that stop two or more users trying to modify part of the model at the same time?

2.What is locked when a diagram is opened, the diagram only or the diagram and all of it contents?

3.Does the tool allow teams of users simultaneous access to the system? Are access control conflicts automatically managed.

4.Can you specify that certain users only have "read" but not "update" access to repository information? For example, you may want to allow quality assurance staff to browse models, but not modify them.

5.Are there facilities to apply version control to the model? Are there facilities to create a "baseline" of the model? Baselines are useful to create a "snapshot" of the model at key points in the development cycle.

6.How scalable is EA? Are there any limits to the number of concurrent users or size or number of models that can be created?

7.Does the multi-user model avoid time consuming and error prone model merging?

8.Does the tool avoid the need to artificially segment the model, duplicating information?

Hi salamah,

I don't mean to be rude, but please do take a look at Sparx announcements in the Latest News section of the forum:

http://www.sparxsystems.com.au/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=Latest

You can start with the announcement of 3.50 Beta, on Oct. 4:

http://www.sparxsystems.com.au/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=Latest&action=display&num=1033737381

I would also suggest for you to do a quick scan of the threads in this forum that relate to your questions. Then, if you have a more specific question, post it so that forum members that have had experience with the issue will be glad to focus-in on it.

These are very valid questions and the reply, when I followed the link, was unhelpful. I too am considering purchase of the corporate version and my colleagues have excersised it with SQL Server and have had some strabge results when allowing two people to access one diagram.

Paul, I think what Jaime meant was, that we'll be happy to answer any specific questions, with which our experience may be helpful. For more general questions, other and better resources are available. I'll point you in the direction:

1. See User Guide: Model Management-User Security
2. See User Guide: Model Management-User Security
3. See User Guide: Model Management-Team Development
4. See User Guide: Model Management-User Security
5. See User Guide: Model Management-Version Control and Model Management-Import & Export-Controlled Packages
6. I don't know. I guess it depends on your database system
7. See User Guide: Model Management-Team Development
8. Just investigate a bit into how the tool works.

And for Paul:
- See User Guide: Model Management-Team Development-Sharing a project, where this is quoted from.

ยท If two or more people work on the same diagram concurrently, unexpected results may occur. It is best to allow only one analyst to work on a diagram at a time

The user guide is available on:

Now you should not have to waste too much time searching yourselves.
