Replication, reconciliation, off-line working

Judging by the (lack of) replies to replication quesitons, this is either not needed much or so obscure that nobody dares to try to work it out... Anyway, here goes.

We have developers working off-line using Replicas. When they return a Replica for reconciliation, what are the implications if they carry on working with their existing replica? If they receive an update from reconciliation with the Master, can they reconcile with their working copy? Are they best to stop work rather than risk getting out of sync? What do other people do for remote working?
