Newbie Class Diagram Question
« on: June 07, 2004, 09:04:55 am »
I'd like my classes to be drawn as rectangle. I'm not showing any operations or attributes so I don't want that dividing line that gets drawn under the name of the class. The only way I've found to get a rectangle is to resize the class to hide the dividing line by dragging the bottom edge of the class upwards.

Is there a better way/an option that can turn the dividing line drawing on/off.

Thanks,
Seoras

Hi,

As far as I know, there is no other way to hide the dividing line except (as you point out) by resizing. Lets see if other users come out with alternative ideas; but here's another way of achieving what you want: instead of a class symbol, use an object (available under "State" and "Activity" in the UML toolbox). There are two drawback, though: 1. Objects are class instances, not classes (example: my cat Timmy is an instance of the class "feline"), and this is probably not what you are modeling; 2. The name of the object will appear underlined.

Hope this helps

Many, many thanks for the suggestions of using objects but the drawbacks you point out stop me from using this approach.

My personal preference would be that the dividing line should not be drawn if the Hide Attributes and Hide Operations diagram options are checked. Or perhaps a new option could be provided to control this.

That's the way Rose is doing it. Probably you should quote an enhancement for that.

20c worth from one with failing eyesight...

I find that the visible horizontal line is very effective at letting me distinguish class elements from objects in diagrams - especially in those diagrams provided by others.

While I appreciate the desire to not show it, I was wondering why its appearance is offensive?
