Problem using fork/join
« on: August 26, 2004, 08:20:21 am »
I'm working on an activity diagram, dropped a fork/join (the horizontal style, if it matters) on it, set it to be a "fork" via the advanced properties, and then attempted to connect it up to my activities.  Unfortunately, I haven't been able to figure out how to do that -- the online help didn't suggest anything, and a search here didn't turn up anything either.  It just doesn't show up in the list of valid destinations.

What I think probably ought to be happening is for it to allow me to assign it a name, and then set the source/destination for my flows to it (should be allowed, since fork/join is a pseudo state).  The properties dialog allows me to enter a name, but it gets cleared when I click on something else on the diagram.

Is this a bug, or am I missing something obvious?

Thanks.
Chip H.

OK, it turns out that the fork was in the list after all -- it's just that it had a blank name.  I didn't notice it because I didn't scroll far enough down (it was the last one in the source/destination list at the time).  Once I added some more activities, the gap in the list made it obvious.

It probably still needs to be assigned a name, because if you had multiple fork/joins on a diagram, you wouldn't be able to tell them apart.  There still may be a way to assign it a name that I don't know about -- I only saw the name field in the properties window, and it wouldn't retain the value.

Instead of using "set source/destination" (where blank values make it hard to tell the elements apart) I find it easier to just draw the flows to and from the elements graphically.
In earlier versions of EA it was possible to give the fork a name, but now I can't find a way to do it. Anyway, I never did that, because I didn't want those names in the diagram.
So my advice is: unless you have entered a lot of detail for a specific association, don't try to reroute it with Set Source and Target. Just delete it and draw a new one instead.
