Updating on Linux
« on: July 13, 2004, 02:20:38 pm »
I'm using Enterprise Architect 4.0 on Linux under CrossOver Office 3.0.1.

I wanted to update to 4.1 and thought I could just download the latest zip file to accomplish this.

I backed up my current EA.exe, and then copied the new EA.exe into the appropriate spot:

~/.cxoffice/dotwine/fakewindows/Program Files/Sparx/EA

However, when I went and started EA, nothing happened.  I tried running ea from the command line (~/cxoffice/bin/ea) and got a nasty traceback list.  I can reproduce this and send if needed.

When I moved back to the old version of Enterprise Architect (4.00.729), the dialogue box to register the product popped up.

Fortunately I have my license code backed up to a separate file, so reregistering the program was not difficult.

Is there any way of cleanly updating the Linux version short of doing an uninstall, reinstall, reregister?

Thanks for making a great product, and thanks for getting it to work on Linux.  I wish there was a native port since under Linux / CrossOver Office it's a bit sluggish even on a Dell 8200 with 768 MB, but running on Windows right now is not an option (virus'ed machine).

Thanks in advance - /mde/

As with any major release of EA, a complete install is necessary i.e. from 3.60 to version 4.0 or version 4.0 to 4.1. With Linux at the moment a complete reinstall of EA is required. At a later stage we are planning to introduce a patch system similar to windows versions.

With Windows, if you do a full install you will be able to use the update patch files to upgrade builds until the next major release of EA.

Hi!

We are considering using Enterprise Architect, and the only reason we are hesitating is the requirement of using CrossOver. Is that a reasonable consideration, apart from the speed issue you mentioned? I mean is it reliable?
