Collaboration Diagram
« on: June 23, 2004, 04:37:19 pm »
Is there any automated way of converting a collaboration diagram to a sequence diagram?

Thanks,

On the other hand: If there would be a way, then you are always in the position to have almost the same information in two different diagrams. Right now you always think twice before creating redundant diagrams  ;)

In my opinion, it would be a VERY useful feature to have an automated conversion feature (and I have requested this from Sparx more than a year ago).
Collaboration ("Communication" in UML 2) Diagrams reveal things to the human eye that aren't easily visible in sequence diagrams and vice versa. And because the two diagram types contain exactly the same information (just presented differently) automating the conversion shouldn't be much trouble.

G'day - back again - new job - new model.

Did anyone get anywhere with this?  If so, I'd love to see the add-in.

Orthogonal views

If the two diagrams mostly contain equivalent information, perhaps it's not so much 'conversion' as 'View as ...' - just a different visual presentation.

In fact, in general, where two diagrams do contain overlapping information, or at least have certain 'points of attachment' between each other, creating an 'orthogonal view' from another perspective would be a useful way of ensuring consistency, and populating a model quickly.

You could then fill in the missing diagram-specific information in each view ... but I won't add this to the "suggested features" forum - it sounds too difficult.
(Go on Sparx - surprise me ;-)
