Evaluation version: install fails
« on: October 13, 2004, 07:05:24 am »
Hello list,

As the subject says, the installation process is failing. The reason is as follows:

- I always install trial packages on a secondary drive;  I instructed the installer to install on a subfolder of drive D

- the install starts, but at some point it tries to create folders in the system folders of drive C (despite having started an installation on drive D)

- since the targeted folders are locked (elementary safety!) the install fails.

This looks like an installer bug to me, but it could possibly be intentional.

As it is, I cannot install this trial package... (please note, I will not circumvent company policy in order to install on a secondary drive).

Thanks for any help!

The EA installer pack includes some shared dlls for the JET database drivers.  If you have the correct MDAC version installed on the machine then I presume it will not try to overwrite them.  However if they are not there, it will try and install them in the system directories.

Which dlls's? Which MDAC version? D ;D ned if I know.

Apparently the installer tries to create some folders in the Program Files directory... so I am not sure this is exactly what you are describing, sargasso :'(

Probably Common Files/Microsoft Shared/DAO (or whatever depending on your OS version) where it puts the DAO 3.x libraries

No really, it's trying to create folders in:

C:\Program Files\Sparx Systems\

which does not look like a common DLL repository... it rather looks like a bug in the installer, where parts of the installer procedures fail to take into account the install path I have chosen.

To install EA on any computer you must have access to the C: drive and be able to write to the registry.

I have successfully installed EA onto a memory stick with a directory structure containing the install several sub-directories from the drive root into the directory. I have tested the trial on several different computers.

Ouch... Thank you for this clarification.

Thaoo bad, unfortunately this is against company policy (and safety policy clearly must supersede other considerations).

I am a member of a flying club. It has been suggested that the best safety policy would be to lock the hangar doors and throw away the key.

Extract whatever morale you want from this analogy.

Really? And is the fuel supposed to be left inside, or outside? This would seem a very important question, especially if the key was made of wood.

Aside from that, troop morale is good, thanks.

(and the moral of this story is, clearly, that not all stories have a moral)

;)

P.S. We've never had a single virus, ad/spyware, or any attack at all for that matter, on any machine. So I will blithely assume that throwing the key away WAS a 100% efficient security measure. And we do work without hindrance (but alas, we do not fly...)
