timing message

I am trying to draw timing diagram for the very first time and having a horrible time connecting the lifelines with message.

I drew two lifelines, both with on/off states. That was easy enough. Then, I followed the instructions: clicked message on timing toolbox and did the click and drag stuff. The dialog box opened but I didn't get the TIMING MESSAGE. Any clue?
