Linking Note to Diagram Note
« on: May 12, 2005, 01:26:17 am »
If you select a Note, in the context menu is the option: Advanced Settings| Link to Diagram Note.

What does this do (apart from creating an unusable Note on the diagram with nothing in it)? ???
Having linked the Note to the Diagram Note, right-click and select properties... ::)

Either enter the diagram note from the properties or from the notes window (which is docked at my config always below the diagram window). Then SAVE the diagram and voila you hae the diagram note inside the diagram window.

Well, thanks for that Thomas, it certainly helped!   :-*

I now see there is a thing called a Diagram Note (the icon two to the right of a normal Note) which you can't attach to with a normal note.  There also a completely different thing called a Diagram Note which you can attach to with a normal Note! ???

Clear as mud!!!  Sparxians give us a break! ::) ::)

BTW Under EA 5, you don't need to save the diagram.  Following some cajoling from me they appear to have improved DB<->Diagram synchronisation.

I just tested with 5.0 and HAD to save. It's obviously the same behaviour as in earlier versions...

Aha... On initial creation you don't have to save, thereafter you do! ::)

Consistency, gotta love it! ;D

Not really. The system behaves consistent ;) once you understand the rules. Any change to diagrams (I mean ANY) take effect only after you save it. That is also true for the diagram notes. The linked note square on the diagram thus gets updated with the notes from the diagram properties only after you save the diagram since at that moment the text is actually available to the note for being displayed. Regarding Undo at all - it's not consistent since it only works for diagrams :P

[SNIP]

I created a Use Case, attached a Note to the Use Case notes.  As I update the Use Case notes (multiple times in a number of elements), the attached Note is updated, without having to save the Diagram!
Is that consistent with what you've said above?  I would have thought it wasn't.  But perhaps you meant any changes at the Diagram level.  The Note attached to the Diagram notes appears to require a save AND a refresh to synchronise correctly!

Paolo

(BTW Evil, I'm not putting Thomas down, nor conceitedly trying to show how clever I am!  I'm genuinely trying to figure out how this tool works - so I can use it to best advantage...)
