Generic questions from a newbie
« on: May 05, 2006, 10:16:49 am »
Hi, all:

I had EA6.1-781 version before and I just downloaded EA6.1-790.  I have a few basic questions.  If you can help, I really appreciate.

1.  The first difference is the Model Wizard on creating a new project.  The Project Browser view is different than before.  We do not have Logical View or Dynamics View any more.  Where should I put those dynamics diagrams, such as Sequence Diagram, nowadays. What is Domain Model?

2.   I have a relatively large project with mutiple applications (EXEs) and several engineers will work on this project.  After researching some of the documents, I think the best way to do project sharing is to use XMI import/Export.  However the EA only support XMI1.2, not XMI2.0.  If I only import/export out of EA, am I going to lose any info when I use XMI Import/Export? Is this the bad choice to use XMI import/Export for sharing?  Does anyone know if we are going to get XMI2.0 soon?

Thanks in advance.

Dion

1. You can create the same structure as before by doing manually. The structure is a suggestion, not a must. Everyone is free to find the one that fits his needs best. There are quite some threads here on this board, which discuss this topic. Also search for Domain Model on this board. It's a very basic question and I suggest to read some books like UML Distilled or something like that.

2. EA can export/import XMI without loosing information - as long as you just use EA. Data exchange between different UML tools is not that easy as XMI isn't XMI (as stated former...). Don't care about any XMI versions. I suspect that like XMI 1.2 isn't XMI 1.2 so isn't XMI 2.0.

If you're only trying to export/import XMI between EA models, then make sure the 'Enable full EA Roundtrip' is checked.  This exports XMI compatible with the UML 1.3, and XMI 1.1 standards.  The other options there are available for if your XMI is for another tool to import.

XMI 2.1 support is currently being worked on.

Hi Simon,

This is, of course, music to my ears. Still...

Please consider something along the lines of how you have handled XMI 1.x. By this I mean an option to select the XMI 2.0 dialect as well as XMI 2.1. I am aware that the differences are minor, and that 2.1 will in furure be the 'real' XMI 2. However, the 2.0 spec has been out there for quite some time, and many vendors have incorporated it into their products. It is likely to be around for quite some time, particularly in earlier versions, and it would be nice to be able to handle these more gracefully.

I've mentioned this someplace in another thread, but it bears repeating here.

Thanks much,
David
No, you can't have it!
