Document Artifact - Template is always launched
« on: May 23, 2006, 03:08:36 am »
Dear,

I'm new to Enterprise Architect and currently I'm playing with the document artifact. Some things aren't quite clear to me:
Is it correct when I say that the document artifact can be used as a container for a dodcument and that the document associated with it (by adding it to the "Files" list) can be launched in the acitivity diagram by double-clicking it?

The problem is that each time I double click it a template is shown and not really the file associated with it.

Perhaps I don't quite understand the use of this element.

Thank you
Kind regards
JFK

JFK,

What you are launching is the default editor for the attached document. EA also lets you assign an external (third party) editor of your choice - I think this affects all attached documents, not just those for artifacts.

If you were to associate something like Word or Notepad (or whatever) with an attached document, double clicking should bring up the document in Word or Notepad. In either case you are actually in the editor, and can modify the document as you wish.

Most commercial editors these days provide an interface that acts (to a greater or lesser extent) as a 'viewer,' showing us what we can expect to see. EA is doing the same thing, but the editor is less wysiwyg.

Thus, while the default EA behavior seems strange, the right thing is probably happening. Set the editor to the application you prefer and things should start acting the way you expect.

HTH,
David

Dear,

Could you tell where I can modify the editor-behaviour. I did find the "Code Editors". Still, here you can only specify external source code editors for programming languages and not for let's say doc-files, etc.

Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place...

Thank you
Kind regards

JFK,

As embarrassing as it is, I've managed to forget (yet again) where this is. Recently (this month) in this forum I was reminded by one of the Sparx folks, so try searching.

In the meantime, it might have been the Custom Tools settings. Check "Custom Tools" and "Opening External Tools" in the EA help. You can also pass parameters etc. This sets the custom tools up in your EA Tools menu.

HTH,
David

The document artifact is an internal document and you are accessing that by double clicking on it.  To my knowledge there is no way to automatically launch an attached file by double clicking on an element.

(The default editor is actually related to the Code Editors found, not this issue and is an issue when pressing Ctrl+E)
