EA slow to load
« on: June 18, 2006, 05:22:31 pm »
Hi, I am using EA 6.1.790 with a 300 MB Repository on SQL Server 2000. EA has suddenly become slow to load, the status bar shows the packages etc shooting in but then displays "Enterprise Architect Configuration" and takes about 3 minutes to load. Network traffic is high during this time.
Any suggestions? - Is there a log I can look at?
Thanks in advance.

When did EA "suddenly become slow to load"?  Did you upgrade to build 790?  If so, then from what build?

We are a new to EA and build 790 is our first. We have a number of users adding information and diagrams. I am thinking it is one of these that is causing the problems.

I've done a packet trace on EA and found it is very "chatty" with the SQL server after the initial model hierarchy load.  For local SQL servers this can be seconds but for remote (across the WAN - and we are talking reasonable link speeds of 10Mbps) it can be upto 3 minutes.

Can Sparx suggest why this is, what EA is doing and  how to tune it?  BTW - I am using the same EA client with the same options to 2 different database servers.  Each server is lightly loaded and contains an identical copy of the same EA repository.

Thanks,
DAvid.

Found the problem.

It is caused by having a UML profile with alternate images on stereotypes.  The more stereotypes (and alternate images you have) the worse the load performance.

For example - across the WAN I reduced the load time from 3 - 4 minutes to 20 seconds by simply setting all alternate images (for the 20+ stereotypes) to none.

I'm going to log this as a bug with Sparx.

David.
