Using EA floating licences in 'mixed' mode
« on: July 03, 2006, 04:36:20 am »
Hello,

We have some floating licences for EA. Some members of our team work at a customer, and would like to use EA at the customer (being there for up to one month at a time); others do their work at the office.
I know both are possible, and was able to configure the keystore in both ways. However, according to the help file, it is possible to configure the key store in mixed mode. I did not find how to this.
What I would like is that people who will be out of the office can choose to lock a key for them (during the time configured in the key manager); but when EA is used in the office the key should automatically be returned to the key store after EA is closed.

Thanks,

Dirk

Probably the easiest method of allowing a mixed mode of operation with your keystore, would involve the creation of two separate keystores.

One keystore should be used for your out of office users and the other for your office users.  The keys from your available pool should be divided between the keystores according to your user requirements.

John,

Would this require two servers?

Also, would it require any additional licensing from Sparx? [Since the floating licenses are essentially 'per seat' like other EA licenses I am assuming the answer here is "no" but asking just to be sure.]

I have had questions from potential users that give me the impression that this might be a vialble direction.

Thanks much,
David
No, you can't have it!

The floating licence keystore can be configured to allow both these types of usage simultaneously if needed.

The keystore can be configured with a period of time that a key can remain checked-out (so as to accommodate for disconnected users), and can be set to tell EA to automatically return the key when the application closes.
The key will only be returned however if EA is able to reach the shared key file, so by disconnecting from the network while still running EA, a laptop user will be able to hold the key until the expiry time is reached.  Once disconnected, EA can be closed and re-opened as needed until the key expires.

Recommended settings in SSKeyStore:
Keys expire after: (administrator decision, possibly 4 weeks in your case)
Auto checkin: Enabled
Automatically release expired keys: Enabled

Hope this helps.

Setting up two keystores does not require any additional hardware.

Each keystore should be saved in separate directories in the file system to help the users identify which keystore they are using for example one keystore could be called local_users and the other remote_users.

Thanks all. Best option for us is to disconnect when EA is still running. We have tested it and it works fine.
The option of two key stores was also considered but is not really valid for us since we do not yet have enough users to make it work.

Thanks,

Dirk
