Problems copying diagrams w/artifacts to clipboard
« on: November 02, 2006, 07:41:15 am »
When using diagrams made in EA in other documents (Word) I usually use the Ctrl-B feature, copying the diagram to the clipboard and then simply pasting it in the desired spot in the Word doc.  Strangely, as soon as I have an instance of an "artifact" element this doesn't work correctly.  The "artifact" elements are not copied at all and the diagram pasted into Word has a red "X" next to the diagram name.  As soon as all artifact elements are deleted from the diagram it can be copied properly.
I'm working with EA 5.00.786 on Windows XP pro.

I experimented around with this problem a little more and discovered the following:

Pasting the same diagrams into Visio (2002 SP-2) works just fine.  Even more interesting is that if I then copy/paste from Visio into Word the diagram appears correctly, without the missing parts like when pasting from EA to Word.

Can anyone reproduce this behavior?  Does anyone have an explanation for what might be happening here?

Check the clipboard format setting in EA.

It's on the Tools | Options main panel at the top right (up to build 799 at least).

I usually use Metafile, although I admit I have not tried it with Artifact elements (at least not since version 4.1). Still, this used to affect the quality of results I got when pasting to Word, so it's probably worth a try.
No, you can't have it!

First off, thanks for the help.
I checked my settings - I am already using metafile format, and  I upped the "Image Memory Limit " to 512MB.  That didn't help.
Just for fun I switched from metafile format to bitmap... and suddenly it worked!  Switching back to metafile brought back the old problems.  I'm not as impressed with the quality of the bitmap graphics in comparison to the metafile graphics anyhow, so I'd like to find a fix to this problem.
Avoiding the artifact component isn't really a solution and detouring the copy / paste process through Visio isn't very satisfying either.

Is this a bug that has been fixed in more recent versions and thus would be solved with an upgrade? (One may rightfully argue that the problem may be with Word ... )

I just tried this out using EA 6.1 build 788.

I created a deployment diagram. Using the toolbar I added Artifact, Document, and Deployment Spec elements. I also added a Class element, and from the drop-down stereotyped it as «model document».

I opened a new document in Word 2003 and tried the Ctrl-B - paste sequence.

Results using Metafile were excellent, producing just what I wanted. Using Bitmap I got something with lower quality and diagram frames (which I did not want or get with the Metafile format.

My guess (note that word) is that you should upgrade to a newer build.
