Composite Element & Connector visibility [help!]
« on: November 09, 2006, 08:43:39 am »
I am trying to create a component model diagram with EA and have created a number of "Composite Elements."  However, I am having a bear of a time trying to create and display connectors (type = association).  I have created associations in the Relationship Matrix and elsewhere and simply cannot get these associations to be visible anywhere.

I have created components "1" and "2."  I then make 1 and 2 composite elements.  I then go into 1 and 2 and create "1.1," "1.2," "1.3," "2.1," and "2.2," respectively.

If I go to the top-level component diagram and make both 1 and 2 "Show Composite Diagram Elements" (Right click > Advanced > Show Composite Diagram Elements).  The sub-level components 1.1, 1.2, etc are now displayed in my diagram.  This is good!

The challenge arises when I want to create a link from, say, 1.2 directly to 2.2.  I can't do this in the top level diagram, can't do this in the composite element diagram (showing 2.1 and 2.2).  I can do this in the "View > Relationship Matrix."  I see all of the elements (1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2) and can create associations and other connections between elements.

However, these links are not visible anywhere on the diagram.  How can I make it so?  Thanks in advance.

A picture is worth how many words?  I am trying to create something like this, but with "Store" being a Composite Element.  How do I create the links between the port @ OrderEntry and any component internal to the Store component?  I have not been able to figure out how to do this using Composite Elements.

I can do this by just drawing all the elements on one diagram, but the architecture is too large/has too many sub-levels to display on one diagram and have it be readable.  Hence the desire for sub-level items.

The only way I can think is to drop "Store" onto its own child diagram, resize it to fill the whole diagram and right-click -> Embedded Elements -> Embedded Elements to display the ports. You might then want to set "Store" as un-selectable by right-click -> Selectable.
