Unique text for child packages
« on: January 29, 2007, 10:55:16 am »
Not sure if I phrased it correctly... but I was wondering how I could put unique info for each child package I have in terms of text. Thanks.

For me, your question is somewhat ambiguous.  Can you clarify what you are after with an example?

umm well basically I'm creating a requirements document which has multiple packages for which on the RTF document I would like to have text explaining what each package means... and so I was wondering how I could show this text on the RTF document; because each package is unique and requires its own description... I hope I was clear... Thanks

Ah... the RTF Document Generator...  In all my time using EA I've managed to avoid using it...  (From postings I've seen here, doing so helps preserve your sanity and reduces the frustration level ;D)

I'm afraid others will have to help here...

Sorry,
Paolo

If I understand it well, you need a different description for different packages. For this you may use Notes field of the package. (RTF tempates can obtain package notes.)

Yes, the Notes field is the field you want to use.

Are you using the RTF template generator for ALL of your documenting needs? You might want to consider using MS Words "Database" field, to link via a SQL directly to the information within your EAP project (if you are storing your EA project on a RDMS.)

By having your project on a RDMS, you will find that the generation of documentation becomes MUCH easier using embedded "database" fields and some other tricks...

Hey guys thanks for all of your input... I've tried using the notes field to display the descriptions of the packages, however, nothing is appearing on the RTF document. I've tried using the notes under the properties of the packages as well as well as in the package through: 'Create Element or Connector | Common Elements | Note.' Yet nothing appears in the RTF... is this what you were referring to when you said use the notes field? Or am I completely off-base. Thanks

Do a search of the forum.

I think I saw something recently - in the last several months, but go back a year or two just in case - that might relate to this.

If I remember correctly, package notes were not appearing in RTF documents. This might have been restricted to either top-level packages, or packages that contained other elements (or perhaps other packages); I just cannot remember off hand.

I'm not sure if any workarounds were suggested, you'll have to look.

I do know that you can do this through automation. If you use MS Office it is easy to write a script in VBA and run it from Word. The downside is that you'd lose the rest of the automated RTF capabilities of EA. You could always use a script to set up the package-level notes and paste them into the RTF, perhaps also through your automation script.

Hey all just wanted to let you all know I figured out my foolish problem. It was a trivial error due to my lack of experience in EA. Simply had to document the notes in the properties and then under package add notes in the RTF Template Generator. I was mistakenly adding the wrong field, then placement was wrong and then I just got really confused. Thanks for all of your help though; greatly appreciated!

It happens.

There's a lot going on in EA, and some of the dialogs are pretty 'busy,' with the RTF dialog being one of the worst offenders.
