Change control in EA using RDBMS
« on: March 21, 2007, 05:35:28 pm »
My company is now moving from local EAP files to a central RDBMS. The problem is that there are designers who have to work on EA without network connection sometimes. Is there anyway that they can work on a local EAP offline and then merge the changes back to the Central EA repository? Using the XMI files are possible. But I do not see any merge functions in EA. And this is a problem for us since lots of people may make changes to a single file sometime.

Thanks in advance for your great help.

1. That would depend to a great extent as to what central rdbms is going to be used.  As in how good is its, so called, replication facilities.

2. Does the phrase "You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all different." mean anything to you?  If not, I suggest you fully explore this avenue on a test basis before commiting everyone's work to oblivion and thus incurring the wrath of your local dollar_god.

hth (sort of)

The phrase was actually:
"You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike..."

;D No it wasn't - you didn't get far enough.

There are two mazes, colloquially known as the "pirates maze" and the "vending mchaine".  In the first encounter, the neophyte is usually in the pirates maze.  There are no clues.  All move actions generate the same response "You are in a maze of ??? ??? ???

SEQ:
{whatever} //depends on version 550 or 770
@endofroad
in|get lamp|xyzzy|light|get|w|w|w|d|w|wave rod|w|w|s|
You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike. Exits lead in all directions.
ENDSEQ:

Note the position of that comma. Every word to the left of it is significant.

aNY WAy .... to get back to the OP

Embarking on sharing a design model is not a trivial exercise, there are many, many threads in this forum on the topic.  I wouldn't even dare to suggest a search pattern but re-iterate .. try it on as an exercise before commiting.  Try, learn, consult and search.  There is a "maze" of expertise in the forums (and it is a maze ... )

I suppose I could say "and don't forget to set the search days to 2.632 x 1026 ............... oooooh.
"It is not so expressed, but what of that?

Oh I forgot, we aren't doing him are we.

I searched the forum and I am just thinking maybe it is a bad idea to share the modal or package in EA at all. There is only one choice for me. The company tried CVS with EA several years and failed. The local EAP is obviously not a solution. We have to use database as Central Repository. And designers what to share the packages. They also want to work offline sometime.
