Corporate Floating License question
« on: March 26, 2007, 05:15:53 am »
Pardon me if this question has been answered elsewhere...

It would appear to me that the floating licenses can only be used if the user has access to the shared network folder containing the licenses at the time that they are using the program, is that correct? (In other words, if I'm out of the office and cannot connect via VPN to the license key manager, I can't use the application...)

Thanks,

Mike:o

I think you can 'detach' a license for a predetermined period. This would allow you to carry EA on your laptop and use it when you weren't connected to your license server. When the interval expires the EA copy on the laptop would be deactivated (until you 'rented' the license from your server again.
No, you can't have it!

The description on the web site mentions 2 modes of operation:
    [1] Auto check-in / check-out
    [2] Timed leases

What you're describing sounds like #2? If so and I want to set the lease time long enough to be able to work off line, is there a way to also force an expiration from within EA when I know I won't be needing it any longer so that I don't tie up a license any longer than necessary?

For example, if I were going to be on the road for a week and had some design work that I needed to get done, I could check out an EA license with a 30 hour lease (assuming that I should be able to connect to the VPN at least once per day to renew it). If after 3 days I've completed the work but there are 27 hours left on my lease, is there a way that I can release it early so that someone back at the office can use the license?

Thanks,

I think - there's some dispute over that assertion so please check the facts - that the "time" in a timed lease is the elapsed time rather than the time the product was running.

Thus, your 30 hour lease would expire in 1 day and 6 hours. If you renewed it on each daily check-in you would never notice this. If you missed a day, then upon starting EA (after another 6 hours had passed) you'd be informed your license had expired and EA would exit.

If you set the license to 3 days, you could renew if you needed more. If you finished up on the laptop and did nothing, the laptop version would cease to function when the 3 days were up, and the server would once again make an additional 'seat' available for lease.

Check this out, but that is how I understand the lease model to work.

A couple more questions:

1) Is there any delay between the time one user shuts down and   when the license is available to another user?

2) Can both models for license management be used at the same time or is this an either-or choice?

3) Can the licenses be used in multiple physical locations from a single key server?

4) Can we allow consultants or outsourced employees to use our licenses?

5) Could we split our floating licenses into more than one pool? (for different locations or classes of user)

6) How fast is checkout from a remote key server?

Thanks...

There is no real "key server" it is file based.

Basically the recommendation is that you have one license file for laptop users that has no expiry time and another license file for networked PCs.

 1) Is there any delay between the time one user shuts down and   when the license is available to another user?
A: The only delay is the time it takes to do a database call. So not very long at all.

2) Can both models for license management be used at the same time or is this an either-or choice?
A: Yes it is possible to mix and match between the two modes, but we do suggest that you create two different Keystores for each purpose.

3) Can the licenses be used in multiple physical locations from a single key server?
A: Yes as long as EA has network access to the keystore.

4) Can we allow consultants or outsourced employees to use our licenses?
A: Yes you can allow anyone in(or working for) your company to use the keys as long as you don't exceed your per-concurrent user limit.

5) Could we split our floating licenses into more than one pool? (for different locations or classes of user)
A: Yes there are no restrictions with this. In some cases it is actually advisable (as long as you have a separate list of keys at the two locations.)

6) How fast is checkout from a remote key server?
A: Basically the same as question1. It really depends on your network connection speed to the Keystore. But there should be very little (if not no delay) on a good connection.

Hope this helps
