Component versioning

I am wondering whether anyone out there has had cause to use versioning on elements (e.g. nodes) and if so, how they did it.
This should not be confused with model version control but is at individual element level - for example:
We have several versions of Oracle Database and over time, one version would be replaced by a more recent version - how would these multiple versions of Oracle database be defined and held in the model and subsequently represented on, say dependency/deployment diagrams?
