BPMN - pools and lanes always show stereotypes
« on: August 20, 2007, 05:29:35 am »
Hi everyone,

I started using EA's BPMN abilities to model a very complex business process that involves several lanes and few pools. Right now I am having a trouble with readability of the model because along with pool and lane names, the stereotype of <<pool>>, <<lane>> also appears and I have no means of making it disappear like with other elements.
I tried going into properties of the diagram and checking off Show Element Stereotypes and this works for all other elements except for pools and lanes. The only way I found to remove these is to remove the stereotype itself and set them to blank but then EA transforms both to ActivityPartions as oppose to pools and lanes which doesn't work for me.
I would appreciate any help in resolving this.

First, please submit a bug report to Sparx on this. Include the name of this thread and paste in the URL to the thread, so Sparx can participate in discussions. You can submit the bug by clicking the Report a Bug link under Support at the bottom[\i] of any forum page.

In the meantime...

EA uses shape scripts to draw BPMN elements. You could likly update these to remove the stereotype. In order to make the scripts visible) you will need to download the BPMN add-in from the Sparx site, and install it in a test project. Then export the appropriate reference data. [You can then uninstall the downloaded BPMN add-in, since it is an earlier version.] Now import the reference data into your project and you will find the BPMN scripts in your Settings | UML dialog on the Stereotypes tab.

HTH,
David

Thanks David,

I submitted a bug to Sparx about this. It's not a terrible one it's just a cosmetic one in nature but I would still like to see it resolved in the near future. I also tried to use the workaround as per your instructions but had no luck.

Why don't you use right click->configure swim lanes. I think it works much better...
Recursion definition:
If you don’t understand the definition read "Recursion definition".

Yes, I could do that.
However, my BA team is using real BPMN notation (they're very savvy with it) to model business process and lanes and pools are used to show the workflow and different roles/work units involved in the process. Reverting to swim lanes will not give us the ability to move to "real" BPMN tool one of these days, or better yet, wait for EA to be able to generate BPEL which would make an otherwise excellent tool into a kick ass modeling tool.

A very long time ago this was mentioned by Sparx as a "future" goal, with no concrete time frame. I sort of hoped it would find its way into EA 7.0, but no luck.

Still, at least it was on Sparx' radar at one time.

We live in hope...
