Appearance of Notes
« on: October 11, 2007, 10:02:15 am »
Is it possible to either change the default appearance of Notes or to create a Stereotype based on Notes with a custom appearance?  In particular, I am interested in reducing the size of the top margin and reducing the minimum size.  The actual appearance is otherwise fine.  I don't see Notes as a base option in the Stereotype dialog or I would start there.

Or, perhaps a different way to skin the cat since the reason for this query is that I am trying to add little labels to a class diagram to indicate the phasing of when they will be implemented, so all I need is a one or two digit number with minimal surround.

How about just using a "text element" instead of a note?  You can configure it with a border color and move it in pretty close to the text so that there is very little margin.

I'm not seeing a Text Element in the Tool Box, nor anything in the More Tools which sounds specifically like it would have a Text Element.

It is available in the "UML Elements" toolbar (not the toolbox).  Go to:  View | Toolbars |  UML Elements

Aha!  I had that tool bar already visible, but hadn't noticed the A ... something to do with the size of the icons, I suppose!

Thanks!

The diagram is notably improved.  Glad I asked and glad you answered.  Thanks.

Hi Thomas,

you CAN sterotype Notes directly by using the properties window - another example of the inconsistent EAUI...

We often apply specific stereotypes to read-only Notes - such as «diagram» and «linked».  THey get rendered differently to unstereotyped Notes.

OK, I see that it is possible to define a stereotype for Note in the Settings/UML ... even though it isn't listed in the combo box for the base classes.  And, I can see in Properties where there is an option to supply a stereotype.  Am I correct that if I wanted to customize the appearance I am basically on my own to define the shapescript ... no starting with the standard appearance and diddling with it a little?

Hi Thomas,

Haven't used shape script, just the other rendering options.... Recognizing the dichotomy that setting the text colour by one mechanism can override the font colour by the other mechanisms...  EAUI!

Take a look at how Sparx has done the annotation element in BPMN. You'll have to download and temporarily install the BPMN 1.3 add-in to get the scripts. You can then export them, uninstall the older add-in, and import the scripts.
No, you can't have it!
