Adding Models to an existing project
« on: October 12, 2007, 09:26:44 am »
If I have a project, can I add models to it? The models dialog shows up when I create a new project. I cannot find any way to bring it up for an existing project. Thanks for your help.

Michael,

The answer is maybe, depending on what you mean.

You can have multiple root elements in an EA project. AFAIK these used to be called "models" sometime in EA's past. Each of these root elements will be the top level of a complete model. You won't be able to (easily) reference elements of one model from another, but you can essentially have all these models open and can work on them in a single EA session.

To do this right-click the root element - which is called Views if you created your project from EABase, via the New command - and choose New Model (root node) from the context menu.

David,

Thanks for your response. But, I may not have explained what I want to do. In one project, when I open it and look at the Project Browser, I see a list like:

Use Case View
Dynamic View
Logical View
Component View
Deployment View
Custom

In newer model where I selected all when I created it, it has many more Views and Models in the Project Browser. So, I would like to add Use Case Model and Class Model to my existing project above.

Does that make more sense?

Michael,

Right click on your root model (usually the project root node that you have previously created) and choose "Add Model using Wizard" from the context menu. This will bring the same dialog window as the one you used when you created the project and allow you to add Use Case Model and Class Model. They will in fact appear as "Views" in your project but that shouldn't be a problem.
I hope this answers your question. Regards,

D

Thanks, that was exactly what I was looking for. I wonder why I did not see it when I looked at that menu? I must be getting old.

Thanks

No Michael, you are not getting old. You've just encountered the 'wonders' of the EAUI - Enterprise Architect Unique Interface.
