As Peter says, the Hierarchy windows can be very useful...  However, care must be taken with it...  I have it docked behind the properties window and only look at it when I need to.  This is because it is a dynamic widow (unlike the browser) and will significantly slow down rendering and movement within the diagram for a complicated model, if it is active (visible).

NOTE: I'm not criticizing the design of the window (unlike most of my other posts  ;)).  This is just a consequence of the nature of the beast.

Perhaps (as I think Peter suggests) having a (more static) browser based upon the model connectivity might be a good way to go...

I don't actually think it will solve my core problem, but I am going to give the current strategy a try and see how I do.
