Cascading Windows in Diagram View
« on: November 20, 2007, 04:16:31 am »
Hi I'm still a newbie,

I miss a quite simple function: cascaded windows in the diagram view: I'd like to view 2 or 3 diagrams at the same time. Does anyone here has an idea if this is possible?

Thanks for your help!
Christian

Not possible, still :'(

However, the diagram tabs were quite an improvement. And with my laptop alone there is no point in having two diagrams open the same time.

Ok,
I'm working with 2 19' screens ;D
This feature would be a great help for me. It would be nice to have the possibility to switch between a "register tab mode" and a "cascaded window mode".

Absolutely!

Even with my laptop, when I get to either my home or office I like to plug in a larger second screen. Being able to split my model across the two screens would make a big difference. This gets even more important when I flip between model sections a lot; I'd love to have the 'other' section open all the time while I worked on a new one.

No, you can't have it!

Maybe you're lucky and find the old threads dealing with this. Else start another one in the Suggestions.

You could run two instances of EA...

That actually works fairly well in a limited number of cases.

However, in some situations you'll find yourself having to reload pretty often. And if you make a mistake (reload in the wrong direction at the wrong time, or reload a model instead of a diagram) it can be a disaster.

I have requested this feature often before (during the 4-5 years I have used EA), and I will be happy to add my vote here too.

After the feature of inserting a diagram frame in another diagram was added, I believe that it was possible to EDIT the diagram inside the frame. I thought that was absolutely brilliant. But now it's not possible, and I'm starting to believe it was just something I dreamed.

But judging from the unwillingness that Sparx shows to add the "view multiple diagrams" feature, there must be some basic weakness in the application architecture that prevents it. They must have registered heaps of requests from users by now, unless they haven't been paying attention. And usually they pay a LOT of attention to the problems of the users. So I guess it must be really difficult for them to implement, or they would have done it.

After all, looking at other applications, it's a feature you would assume was there. What word processor, drawing program, etc. would not allow you to view two documents at once? And copy & paste between them?

Anyway, please add the feature now :)

Best regards,
Mikkel

P.S. @KP: I have tried working with two open EA instances. I believe the reload button was added after a discussion I had with Sparx about this method of working. But like Midnight said, the risk of messing something up and losing work is just too great.

As another work-around: use the EA viewer for a 2nd look. That can only read and not mess around. (Haven't tried this)

Mikkel: I never saw it working with editing inside frames. You can dbl-click to open and edit. And the contents is updated dynamically.

True, but what we really need is multiple editable views.

Maybe it WAS a dream! Anyone have the old builds?
