Debugging a DLL running in a Host service
« on: January 02, 2008, 01:45:05 pm »
I am new to EA.  I am trying to generate sequence diagram for an existing software.

I have a DCOM server 'NS.dll' that gets loaded by a Host application 'Host.exe' running as a service under 'Local System' account.

I placed a couple of breakpoints in the NS.dll source code.  I used 'attach' to attach to the 'Host.exe' service.  But, the breakpoints remain unbound.  I have administrative rights.  Any suggestions?

One of my collegue told me that I need to run EA with 'Local System' account.  So, I started EA from a command window within 'LocalSystem' context.  But, the 'SSProfiler5_70.exe' crashes with Memory Access violation.  Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm guessing here, but from your description it sounds like you would need to run EA as a Windows service.

A while back there was a post, where one of the Sparxians confirmed that EA won't run as a service. At the time this did not seem to be viewed (by Sparx) as a bug since - I'm making an assumption here - EA was not designed to be a server.

I don't recall seeing anything about this in release notes, so it is likely you're out of luck.

Not much help I know, but perhaps you need to try another solution.

Could you do this interactively by running EA from a command file? If so, perhaps there's another way around this. Unfortunately it doesn't come to me off hand.

No, you can't have it!
