Multi Language - how ?
« on: March 07, 2008, 07:37:12 pm »
Hello,

is there any option (or idea), how to cope with multi language issues ? We are about to define a huge application, which will have different GUI languages (dialogs will be multi language). So, we need to create the documentation in several languages for training purposes.

I would like to model one element, adding different names and notes for different languages for the same element (e.g. Actor name&notes in german/english, UseCase german/english, Process german/english etc.). An when printing, the different languages should be taken for different report outputs.

Are there any functions in EA that support this language venture ?
Are there any other practical experiences with that topic ?

Regards
Bernd

Bernd,

There is a fair amount of stuff buried in the forum. I think the results have been mixed, but some have fared better than others. I suspect it depends on the specific configuration and requirements involved.

Search the forum. Search several times, using different keywords. YABB can be strange about finding things.

I wish I could give you a clearer answer, but when you search you will understand why this would be difficult.

Actually, some people have made this work. It really depends on exactly what you want and can live with. Once you get beyond some core capabilities it quickly comes apart.

Search the forum...

What I would do is keep your translation external from EA (in Excel or so).
I did that to create multilanguage reports in Word, generated from EA. To make sure you don't miss some translatable items you could use the API to create an export to excel.

For two languages (English and Czech) I use Name and Alias fields. And it works for me with the checkbox "Use alias if available". More or less works in fact ;-)
