Can I build my own models in EA?
« on: June 02, 2008, 07:29:57 pm »
I'm new to EA having used system architect for a while.  Just wondered how I go about building my own models and configuring the tool for my own use?

I won't be using the UML models at all, I'm looking more at the higher level business integration diagrams (a couple of SSADM models plus a few of our own).  I will be using the DFDs and BPMN models.  I'd like to be able to choose my own set of models and limit the user to these only.  Finally, I want to be able to link the models so I can drill down from the highest level (context model) down to the lower level process maps.

I've had a quick play with the Zachman plug in it looks pretty similar to what I'm after i.e. a front presentation page with lower level models linked into it.

So where do I start?!

Many thanks in advance.

Yes you can.

This is a complex area, but certainly possible. In fact, that's how Sparx created the Zachman MDG Technology. Those are the operative words there, what you've got to build is an MDG Technology for your domain.

Look at the EA help, check the Resources page on the Sparx Web site, and search this forum. The documentation is somewhat sketchy, but is continually improving (thanks Roy).

I also would like to build this type of "drill down" capability in an Analysis Model for business process modeling. How can I get this functionality without using MDG?

If you are only using UML - without extensions that would require a customization along the lines of a profile (such as BPMN or such) - then look into composite elements and hyperlinks.

You will find information on both in the EA help file.

Thanks. That will be helpful.

From my main BPM diagram I can create a composite. On the next level composite I can have activity elements that represent different perspectives in the architecture. Each of these elements can then have composite diagrams that contain infrastructure, resources, security, etc.

Search my recent posts for other information about adding 'inner' diagrams. Search elsewhere in the forum for hints on using hyperlinks to sew the whole thing together.
