How to use existing class in as Association class

I would like two of my classes to be related via an Association that uses a 3rd existing class in the model as the Association class. The "Association class" connector in pallete launches a dialog that does not seem to allow choosing an existing class. Is this a known issue or am I doing something wrong? TIA for your help.

Right click on a class in a diagram and select Advanced | Association class.  The resulting dialog allows you to choose an association (showing on the diagram) to link the class to.
