Setting Appearance options on diagrams by default

Is there a way to do this so that all diagrams, or diagrams of a specific type have a default appearance setting.

e.g. I want to set Show alias if available on by default

Have a look a template packages. I think it only works for diagrams of a specific type, so you might have to create one diagram of each type in your template package.
