Best DBMS Server Repository
« on: December 16, 2008, 06:37:18 pm »
I am setting up EA to use a DBMS Server for the first time, and would appreciate advice on the best database to use.  I see EA's Help says that MySQL has some limitations.  Is Oracle the best then?

Thanks.

I've found the topic you're referring to.  (http://www.sparxsystems.com/uml_tool_guide/uml_model_management/modelmanagementdiscussion.html).

1. This details a limitation of one type of MySQL repository, but it won't change the way EA works for you.
2. I believe this is out of date, and that there are no limitations on search under MySQL.  I will see that this gets changed.  (Although I am aware of an issue with searches under Oracle)
3&4. Not a limitation, just a minimum version.  There are version restrictions on all databases that EA supports.

In our testing, MySQL repositories achieved the best performance over slower networks.

Thanks Simon, sorry I should have quoted that link myself.

Actually, I've just realized that I can only choose between SQL Server 2005, Oracle 10g release 2 and PostgreSQL 8.3, as I want to integrate with Canonic Cadeo® For EA/QC and this is what they support.

In your experience, which of these 3 is the best please?

Thanks.

Well, I've got to say that I've never had any problems using postgreSQL as a back end.  In fact (IIRC) after the 2-4hr intro tutorial (including the EA "how to use postgreSQL") everything "just worked".

Oh I forgot, we aren't doing him are we.

Thanks for the tip.  As it turns out, my client only supports Oracle.  So I'll try that and see how it goes.
