issue while openingan existing project
« on: February 04, 2009, 06:56:51 am »
Hi,

i have 2 PCs at work. i created my project under PC1, however when i try to open it under PC2, EA displays a warning message that it can lock the file.
result : i can not open the project on another computer except on the one used to create the project itself.

What is the problem ?

thanks.

I can not open the screenshot as Rapidshare is blocked from here.

However I can imagine a few things:

- Did you copy the file while EA has opened it on PC1? Try closing EA first on PC1, then copy to PC2
- Did you copy the EA file from PC1 or did you simply a "Save As"? In the latter case it will not work as Save As only creates a shortcut.

Hi Olivier,

Basically the EA project is on my external USB HDD. So the project is still the same but i just plug/unplug the HDD and let's go to work.

However, it is not so :-(

It could be a file system lock on the file by not cleanly unmounting the USB drive. Copy the file to a local disc on PC2 and retry, that would give a clearer picture.

Hi Olivier,

thanks for the tip, it works well.
it's crazy that USB does not allows EA to create a ldb file on it.
i do not understand because this problem occurs only under EA.
other softwares do not have such issue.

The files created by EA are representations of a database structure. If the USB drive is not cleanly unmounted some important changes might not be written to the file thus EA assumes the file is still open (eg. a transaction is not yet committed, etc.) and refuses to reopen it.

It might be worth a bug report but I believe it is hard to be fixed.

In the tools menu there is an option "Repair EAP file" which might help further.

I don't think this is an EA bug per se but a limitation of the Jet database driver. Still, some kind of warning (somewhere) in the EA documentation might be in order.

I'll leave it to you folks - or anyone else who has this problem - to send a report to Sparx. I have long since taught myself to close things before popping USB (and other removable storage) devices.
No, you can't have it!

I have a SimpleTech USB HDD and ALL of my EA projects are contained on the drive with no problem what so ever in opening them
