Element Appearance submenu "Align Text"
« on: February 07, 2009, 02:39:01 am »
Does anyone understand WHEN the options under this submenu for an element are enabled?

For instance, I drop a boundary or even a class/use case/etc. onto a diagram; name it, then when I check using the element menu bar, the "Appearance" submenu "Alignment" they ALWAYS are grayed out (disabled.)

This has finally got to me after years of working with EA  ;D

Stupid question: Did you try selecting multiple elements at once before opening that menu?  :o

Because here it works...

Aligning one single item is somehow shizophrenic  :-?

LOL I agree, but I was talking about "Text" alignment! You get to it from the element submenu appearance, then alignment.

Try it , youll see that the icons show aligning text vertical and horizontally, but are disabled. :(

Those options are not for aligning text in an element. They are for aligning the left or right borders of two or more selected elements, as Oliver says.

I think there might be a case for changing the two icons next to the menu options, to remove the suggestion that they work on text. You could submit a feature request, and I will raise it too.

The ability to align the displayed text associated with an element's Name attribute would also be helpful (e.g., Boundary's name) this "text alignment "function is described as a feature of the text associated with an embedded element, at least it seems possible!

Thanks, I will request this as a feature...

Also, I noticed that there is this capability in the shape script arena… e.g., “h_Align - Affects horizontal placement of printed text and subshapes depending on the layoutType attribute. Valid values: left, center, or right”, since I have not played with that area at all, do you think there might be a solution to be had there?

Stop Press - My colleagues tell me that the two icons in the menu should already be like the ones in the toolbar. You just have to refresh the menu to update the icons. (Tools | Customize, select the Menu tab and click on the Refresh button).

Where is this text alignment feature in embedded elements described?

Search 7.5 Help: "Align Text", then select topic "Shape Attributes"

Just a brief cautionary note...

When you refresh the menu you will lose all customized settings for menus, command buttons, etc. If you have anything you need to restore, particularly if your customizations include anything you wouldn't automatically remember, then make a list before you refresh the menu.

I believe this is clearly documented, but it bears repeating whenever using a menu refresh is advised. There are several such situations, of which the subject of this thread is one.
No, you can't have it!
