does anybody of you know if the WANOptimizer will only work with the 7.5 version?

Is there any description paper on how the Optimizer works?

Thanks in advance

The WAN optimizer only works with 7.5. You will have to setup the database connection with different options which are available in 7.5 only.

If you install the software the manual gives hints on the procedure how to set it up and how it operates.

A bit minimalistic though but usage is straight forward.

Has anyone actually tested the WAN Optimizer yet?  Do you see a big performance improvement?

I am that close to test it through a VPN connection.
I have the machine here to install it, I just have to attach it to the network and install the software.

Stay tuned as I hope to do it this week and post results.

Just to back up what Oliver said: yes it does only work in 7.5 (the beta 2 release of the WAN Optimizer only works with build 842 or greater).

In terms of a description of how it works, here is a quote from the service user guide:

Quote
The Sparx Wan Optimizer is a lightweight Windows service that is intended to be installed on a Local Area Network (LAN) connection to a Database Management System (DBMS) that hosts an Enterprise Architect repository. The service can be configured to listen for client connections on a particular port, and acts as a local proxy to execute queries and return the results in a compressed format to the client.

The Wan Optimizer significantly improves Enterprise Architect's performance in a Wide Area Network (WAN) by reducing the amount of data transmitted and, in turn, the number of network calls made.

We have performed a few unofficial tests ourselves and witnessed anything between from 3 up to 8 times speed improvement (depending on what DBMS you are using) on tasks such as loading a model, opening a large diagram and performing an XMI export on a large package. One user has also reported elsewhere on the forums that an ordinary load time of 15 minutes was reduced to 30 seconds with a combination of lazy loading and the WAN Optimizer.

That said we can't really make any firm promises on the extent of performance improvements you might see as to some extent it is subjective on the DBMS you use and the characteristics of your Wide Area Network (bandwidth constraints in particular).

The beta release of the WAN Optimizer service is available for download to registered users however, so if you are interested I would recommend you download it and give it a try.

The other user review is here:

There is a section in the EA Help (integrated with the beta releases) on the WAN Optimizer - look for WAN Optimizer | Introduction in the Index.
