Component "Indicator" ?
« on: March 26, 2009, 12:20:57 pm »
Have been thinking about how best to accomplish this, but I reckon the smart guys out there have already come up with the best way of doing it.

I have Component diagrams that are well-populated with Component. Lots of those little suckers.

For many Comonents, I have added "defined information" - in the Notes compartment- but in others I have yet to add this information.

As a reminder to myself that I need to populate this information - how could I set the appearance of a Component with a small, subtle marker, so that I can see from the diagram that this information is missing?

Happy if it's a manual thing - something I set when the information is added - or set when the information is missing - perhaps a little diagonal mark in the corner of the Component shape?

Don't want to use colours, because we're already using colours for something else.

I've heard of SmartShapes, but unless someone can show me a fully worked example of how that whole thing works - I probably won't be able to find the time to do the customisation to get there.

Any ideas?

Thanks - Jon

How about a "bookmark"? Select a diagram object and press Shift+Space and a red triangle will appear on the top edge. Same keystroke removes it.

Don't you want to show the notes themselves, or perhaps the first few characters of the text? You can show the Notes compartment on the Component elements and (with Feature Visibility) set the maximum number of characters to show in the Notes compartment. By restricting the number of characters you would minimise the dispruption of the diagram layout as the notes text expands.  Look at the Elements tab of the diagram Properties dialog, or the Feature Visibility topic.
Best Regards, Roy

Wow. I figured you guys would come up with something good.

Bookmark. I'll try that now.

I'll also try Roys' approach. That may work, too. In fact, if I can limit the information displayed to only the first line of the Notes compartment, I may be able to put a single descriptive line of text as the first line in the Notes compartment, which will give me more information ... maybe.

I'm assuming that either suggestion would be local (only on my client view) - not something that would be visible to all persons viewing the diagrams?

Thanks, guys.

No, each of the suggestions will be visible to anyone viewing the diagram.
