Export as model branch

I have a model under version control in subversion. I can successfully check in and check out the packages individually. The packages have different vc- configurations. The problem occurs when I try to export the root node as a model branch. All I get in the EAB-file is the  root node. Shouldn't all child packages also be represented in that structure?
What is the difference between importing a model branch compared to Get package on the root node package?
