Normal.rtf and the RTF editor
« on: October 07, 2009, 10:34:12 pm »
In the EA help it says

"At version 7.5 of Enterprise Architect, the Normal.rtf template is included as a system template. This provides user-editable defaults of styles, numbering and other base formats.

Any styles modified in Normal.rtf reflect in newly created templates. The template file is stored with the Enterprise Architect system directory (in C:\Program Files\Sparx Systems\EA\DocTemplates).

Use the RTF Style Template Editor to open and modify the template, but ensure there is no body text when saved. "

This is good stuff, but that last sentence is confusing me.   I've checked Normal.rtf definitely exists in the location specified in the help, but I can find no "Open file" dialogue in the RTF editor to be able to open Normal.rtf to edit it.    All I can see is modify an existing template (but Normal.rtf is not listed) or create a new template.   Does anyone know what I am missing ?

thanks

Still have a problem with this,  but just thought I'd let you know that I right-clicked on the normal.rtf where I found it in DocTemplates and under "Open with..."  there's an option to open with "Enterprise Architect - UML Case Tool"  !

I thought I'd cracked it,  however taking this option didn't help - all I got was " An Error has Occurred: Unrecognized database format 'C:\Program Files\Sparx Systems\EA\DocTemplates\Normal.rtf'."

Can you edit it with MS Word (or some other RTF file editor)?

Well, you can certainly edit it in Word - but is that the method that's supposed to be used ?

The EA Help definitely implies you should be able to do it within EA, it says

"Use the RTF Style Template Editor to open and modify the template"

EA inherently opens/saves to templates which are stored internally - hence there is no File-open/File-Save
As this is an external file - use the RTF editors:
File | Import
File | Export

I have modified the paragraph in the Help to clarify what you have to do, and to link to the relevant sections inthe RTF Template Editor text. It now reads:

At version 7.5 of Enterprise Architect, the Normal.rtf template is included as a system template. This provides defaults of styles, numbering and other base formats. Any styles modified in Normal.rtf reflect in newly created templates. The template file is stored with the Enterprise Architect system directory (in C:\Program Files\Sparx Systems\EA\DocTemplates). Use the RTF Style Template Editor to import, open and modify the template, but ensure there is no body text when saved. Export the modified template back to the DocTemplates folder.
Best Regards, Roy

Dermot/Roy - thank you, and that change to the help is indeed very helpful for anyone else who needs this.
