I was not able to find a hint on this: how far are 7 and 8 compatible. Any major DB changes? Can I test work on 8 and still continue with 7 (in parallel)?

version 7 and 8 are probably compatible (given the history of EA's backward compatible versions) and I'm afraid there won't be any major database changes.
They did mention something about indexes being added, but that should normally not interfere with the existing version.

On the other hand, I would not open any production models with EA 8.0 before it is out of beta. (just to be on the safe side)
