How to embed Word doc into Model
« on: April 05, 2010, 02:27:01 am »
I have several Word docs that I would like to embed into the SQL Server repository for that model (and include in a model/diagram).  How do I do that?

Before you make a final decision (since you can create document artifacts and hold rich text in them), also investigate linked documents.

You can then make a better decision as to what is the most appropriate technology for your circumstances.

Hi Paolo,

Thanks so much for your reply.  The reason I wanted to be able to embed the documents is 1) to assure that the docs are saved - and can be reached from a spot that is in context, and 2) I hope - if this were possible - that then others working on the model can reach the document via the model.  Yes, I did look at linked docs, but it seems that 1) the link is to a local file on that user's pc (or a web link - which separates the doc from the model), or 2) I see they can be created, but in this case the doc already exists.  Is it possible to embed docs in some way - or am I still missing something?

Tx

I thought I saw something in the V8 Beta documentation about being able to embed various documents types, but I can't find it again.

If you're using v7.x I think the only mechanism is to create Document Artifacts and copy and paste the Word information as RTF into these docs.  (So they aren't true Word documents any more).

Again, I'm not an expert in this area.

One possibility worth investigating is to create a linked document (right click the element and then create linked document)

Then either copy and paste the Word document, or insert the document as a Word OLE object.

This document is embedded into the EA model rather than just be linked via a file path, in addition when the element that contains a linked document is placed on a diagram there is a little red A in the bottom left. This is useful to other users of the model, to indicate that something else is there.

Cheers
