Looking for BPMN Getting Started Resources
« on: November 10, 2010, 10:15:37 am »
I am experimenting with BPMN.  I want to see if it can be used to help software development staff, product management and business analysts understand the business logic associated with the software we develop.

I am using Sparx Enterprise Architecture Version 7.1.830.

So far my understanding is that Enterprise Architecture provide the figures used in BPMN Diagrams but it does not enforce BPMN Rules.

Is anyone aware of any resources such as tutorials etc that would help me understand how to create BPMN Diagrams using Enterprise Architecture?

Thanks

Todd

What do you mean with how to draw?

What BPMN stands for and what all the elements mean you can find at bpmn.org. Here you can find your cheat-sheets. The rest is up to you.

Steven,

Thank you for the information.

To answer your question, I meant how to draw/create BPMN Diagrams using Sparx Enterprise Architect.  I have the BPMN Specifications from BPMI.org.  The specifications describes the elements of a BPMN Diagram.

Based on my understanding of those specifications I now have to figure out how to use Enterprise Architecture to create the diagrams.  For example the specifications describe a "subprocess" but the EA BPMN Core toolbox does not have a "subprocess" object.  EA has a "Business Process" object.  I need to figure out if EA wants me to use "Business Process" in place of the specifications "subprocess".

I'm interested in any tutorials or documentation that describes how to create BPMN Diagrams in EA.

Hi Todd

It's been a while since I used EA version 7.1  :)

Currently BPMN uses Tagged Values extensively, so for example to create a sub-process, you use an Activity element and then set a tagged value to sub process (there are too many tagged values to list here, most are used potentially for BPEL generation). Similarly for gateways and events.

Try the tagged values, if all else fails can you upgrade to version 8.0 and get the latest BPMN 1.1?

Cheers

Phil :P :P
