Master / Replica vs Compacting the Model

It appears that compacting a Design Master removes information on "older" replicas, it also appears that replicas can "renew" this information by frequently synchronizing with the master.
When trying to sync a "old" replica after a compact you get an error stating that synchronization is not possible as there is "no common point to start from" is there a way to re-register a "old" replica with a compacted master?
