Using Sparx to manage a Standards Information Base
« on: June 01, 2011, 03:10:18 am »
I am starting to do an analysis of what technologies we use in which systems, and a TOGAF/FEAF Standards Information Base seems like a good model to use. Sparx has a TOGAF Standards Information Base diagram type, which has the right data types even have pre-defined FEAF tagged values defined (cool), but after that I hit a bit of a wall. Is anyone else using Sparx for this? I can't find any references to FEAF or TRM in the forums.

SIBs are described nicely at http://pubs.opengroup.org/architecture/togaf8-doc/arch/chap21.html and the broader FEAF project at http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/e-gov/fea/.

I've found some nice looking SIBs online (http://www.opengroup.org/sib.htm, http://www.va.gov/TRM/ToolListSummaryPage.asp?).

My theory is that I could use the TOGAF TRM taxonomy as a starting point, probably tweak it a bit to suit our business, and then categorize the technologies used in my company into a Standards Information Base (SIB), which developers could then use as a reference to know who uses what technologies across the enterprise.

Suggestions?

We have an SIB based on TOGAF in EA. We imported the information using CSV rather than typing it all in.
The trick is create a dummy standard first and then export to CSV file. Copy and paste the TOGAF fields into the relevant columns and import into an EA model. You will need to create the packages required to group the standards together for the TRM the move the Standards into the relevant package.
Hope that is the information you were after. :)
