This note is linked to an internal element feature

Hi all.  I returned to update a hand draw diagram that I have Notes all over to discover that when I drop a Note from the common toolbox I get a message

"This note is linked to an internal element feature - it cannot be edited.  To adjust the note content, use the connector context menu linking this note to another object to set the feature currently linked to."

The problem is I want to continue adding floating notes, and I can't discover what I might have changed to create this behaviour.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

The note has been created be right clicking the note connector and setting "Link to element feature". That way the note shows the selected feature. To undo that delete the link.
